Natural Beauty in Hangzhou

Take a boat ride on a magnificent waterway in Hangzhou, discover UNESCO-protected landscapes and sip traditional tea at a plantation.

About Your Trip

Imagine visiting a place that’s so unique, it’s been given special designation recognized around the world. In Hangzhou, China, you can explore two of these amazing UNESCO Word Heritage sites in one day! The first is a monumental feat in engineering, a canal that starts in Beijing and ends in Hangzhou, while the other is an outstanding spot where beautiful natural landscapes blend perfectly with manmade structures.

Your adventure beings at the Grand Canal Museum near Gongchen Bridge. It houses an abundance of relics and documents dedicated the canal’s long history. Hop a boat for a ride along a section of this man-made 1,104-mile (1,777-kilometer) waterway — this part is known for several historical sites such as well-preserved Fengshan Water Gate and ancient Fuyi Granary. Before lunch, visit the Longjing tea plantation just outside the city in the West Lake region. Here, tea bushes grow on fertile hillsides accessible by stone walkways. Indulge in a cup of this tea that others have enjoyed for more than 1,200 years! Then, explore the scenery around West Lake by electric vehicle. This UNESCO-protected area is known for serene views of bridges, gardens and temples, providing inspiration for artists for more than a thousand years. End your day with a painting experience where you can take home your masterpiece as a souvenir of your memorable times in Hangzhou.

What we love:
• Longjing tea, or Dragon Well tea, is sought out around the world for its flavorful sweet taste and an aroma that’s reminiscent of chestnuts.
• West Lake’s idealized fusion between man and nature is among the most important sources of inspiration for Chinese garden designers. The lake and surrounding area are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site called West Lake Cultural Landscape of Hangzhou.
• Said to have originated in Hangzhou, Beggar’s Chicken is a popular dish that starts with a whole chicken wrapped in lotus leaves, then coated in clay to retain juices and baked in an oven at low heat.

Hangzhou’s inspiring West Lake is surrounded by temple gardens, pagodas and lush woodlands. This cherished natural landmark has been immortalized in art, literature and poetry since the 9th century.
